From L-R, Sheriff, Makarfi |
The leadership tussle in the
Peoples Democratic Party came to an end today (Wednesday) after Ali Modu Sheriff
was sacked as the Chairman of the Party and former Kaduna State Governor, Ahmed
Makarfi was reinstated as the National Chairman of the party.
The declaration was made by a
five-man panel of the Supreme Court which was led by the Chief Justice of
Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen. The judgment pronounced Ahmed Makarfi as the
national Chairman after he was
earlier sacked by the Portharcourt Division of
the Court of Appeal.
Justice Bode Rhodes-Vivour who
read the leading judgement held that contrary to the majority judgment of the
Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt, the suit filed by Makarfi faction before the
Federal High Court in Port Harcourt was not an abuse of court.
The Supreme Court insisted that the
May 21, 2016 PDP National Convention rightly and constitutionally removed
sheriff.
There had been a contest between
Ahmed Makarfi and Ali Modu Sheriff as to who the PDP national chairman will be.
Many members of the party including former governors and lawmakers left the
party stating the division as the reason for their action.
It was also noticed that Ali Modu
Sheriff was missing in court while Ahmed Makarfi was present along side other
members of the PDP including Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose and Rivers State
Governor, Nyesom Wike.
